Bikes for Hurricane Katrina Students

Texas A&M University took in several hundred students who were going to school in areas hit hard by Hurricane Katrina.

The BVC, led by Lisa Tauferner, got together 14 bikes for the evacuee students. Many of the bikes given away were originally abandoned at Texas A&M and confiscated by the University, where they'd sat outside at Purchasing and Stores, rusting away. Most of the bikes at Purchasing and Stores were unusable, but there were a few that could be repaired. A few bikes were given by club members and friends.

Students who wanted bikes were asked to submit contact information and 100 words on why they wanted a bike. Recipients came from this pool of applicants. Unfortunately, we were nowhere near having enough bikes for everyone.

Here are some pictures of the students receiving their bikes.

Thanks to Lisa Tauferner, Regina Hokanson, Shawn Hokanson, George Huebner, Jean Marie Linhart, Chris Mentzer, Michael Mertes, and Rod Wagner (proprietor of Aggieland Cycling) for assistance with this project.
