Each year, BVC sponsors a bike to work celebration in the Bryan/College Station area to promote safe cycling and alternative transportation. Originally, Bike to Work Day was a set of breakfast stations in the area where commuting cyclists could get something to eat or a treat during their commute. In recent years, bike to work day has been a grand celebration on Northgate, with Freebirds offering free or half price burritos to those attending on their bikes. Robert Rose owner of Cycles, Etc. bike store in College Station has been coordinating Bike to Work Day for the last 5 years.
Bike to work day for Bryan/College Station usually occurs on the last Friday in April before classes at Texas A&M conclude for the semester, since we wish to include the student bicycle commuters in our local celebration. In many parts of the USA, Bike to Work Day is a part of the League of American Bicyclists' National Bike Month celebration. This takes place in May.
Do people from your office bike to work?
Send a digital photo to Shawn Hokanson of folks from your office with their bikes and commuting gear (including helmets), include your company sign or logo in the picture, and also send us the names of everyone in the picture. Entry photos will be posted to the web, and 3 winners will be drawn at random for lunch (for a least 4 people, depending on the number of folks in the photo) at Blue Baker. Everyone in the photo will also get a free club membership, including entry to the BVC Summer Time Trial, held on Wednesday nights on HWY 47, west of College Station.
If that was not enough, we will also hold a vote for best legs of those in the photos. Those pictured in the best legs photo will receive Blue Baker lunch and free club memberships for the 2005 season.
Send us your photos, and pass it on to folks you know who bike to work. You don't have to be a BVC member to enter or win! This contest IS subject to modification based on consultation with club membership during and following the April club meeting.
