Each year, BVC sponsors bike to work day in Bryan/College Station to promote safe cycling and alternative transportation. Bike to Work Day was originally a set of breakfast stations in the area where commuting cyclists could get something to eat or a treat during their commute on Bike to Work Day. In recent years, Bike to Work Day has been a grand celebration on Northgate, with Freebirds offering free or half price burritos to those attending on their bikes. Robert Rose owner of Cycles, Etc. bike store in College Station has been coordinating Bike to Work Day for the last 5 years.
Bike to Work Day for Bryan/College Station usually occurs on the last Friday in April before classes at Texas A&M conclude for the semester, since we wish to include the student bicycle commuters in our local celebration. In many parts of the USA, Bike to Work Day is a part of the League of American Bicyclists' National Bike Month celebration. This takes place in May.

Both Bryan and College Station city councils issue proclamations for Bike to Work Day. The College Station city council issued the Official Bike to Work Day proclamation on April 8th at their regular council meeting. The Bryan proclamation is slated for Tuesday, April 27th 6:00 pm.

This year BVC is initiating a bike
giveaway. We have partnered with Project Unity in Bryan to
deliver a commuter ready, Trek 800 bicycle to someone in need of
transportation. This bicycle is equipped with front and rear lights,
a rear rack and the recipient will receive a coupon from BVC,
redeemable at Cycles, Etc. for a bike helmet.

The bike to be given away. Donated by Billy Cox.
Jeannie McGuire, President of Project Unity is very excited about this program. One of the missions of Project Unity is to help families eliminate barriers that keep them from reaching their goals and improving their lives. One of the major hurdles is often transportation to and from work. With the bicycle provided from BVC, one family in our community will be able to overcome at least one major barrier and help themselves.
We hope that the bike giveaway grows so that we can continue to help our community and promote safe, alternative transportation in Bryan/College Station. If you have a bicycle that needs a new home, please contact Billy S. Cox, Jr., our bike giveaway coordinator at billycox at mindspring dot com. Billy donated the Trek 800 that we will be giving away in 2004.
